Horns at the dorms, drums on the quad

As we approach the end of spring 2017, our students are preparing for exams, final projects, juries and the like, but they’re still finding time for a little fun, too. Students from our horn studio and the African Music Ensemble surprised passers-by with a bunch of impromptu performances over the last few weeks in some places you’d never expect. Considering Matthew Shepard: Three Bach-ian Perspectives

Considering Matthew Shepard, an oratorio by conductor/composer Craig Hella Johnson, will be presented by UGA choral ensembles under the composer’s direction in two upcoming concerts: Friday, March 17, at 8PM, in Hodgson Hall; and Saturday, March 18, at 7:30PM, at the First Presbyterian Church in midtown Atlanta.

Students in MUSI 8130 (Seminar: “Innovating the Ensemble”) have examined this new oratorio. Three seminar members have contributed the following perspectives, all of which tie the oratorio to Bach and the larger oratorio tradition. Students from Moi Girls’ High School in Eldoret, Kenya, which has a years-long relationship with the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, traveled to Georgia this month to experience the University, Athens and more. Music Grad School Apps – Faculty Roundtable

Wednesday, November 16 | 7:00 pm | Choral Suite

This roundtable event will be an open forum in which faculty representing all of our areas at The Hugh will discuss tricks and tips for submitting your best application! Come prepared with any and all questions, this event is meant to be an opportunity for you!

Pylon Reenacment Society (with School of Music faculty & students) will open for Cindy Wilson (The B-52s) at the 40 WATT, Saturday OCT 15/ 8pm.

The Hugh Hodgson School of Music regularly lends its talents to more than just UGA’s East Campus, and a perfect example of that is coming soon!

Pylon Reenactment Society and local band Monsoon will be opening for Cindy Wilson of the B 52’s Oct 15 at the fabulous Forty Watt! Doors open at 8/ show is at 8:30-$10.00 admission. Everyone is welcome! UGA (piano) faculty accompanist Damon Denton is the keyboardist for Pylon Reenactment Society, and School of Music trumpet student Anderson Romero and alumnus Geoff Wood will take part in the performance as well. Come on out and have a great time with Athens most danceable band and recent winner at the FLAGPOLE MUSIC AWARDS.
